T-Mobile completed the first-ever AI-powered Radio Access Network (AI-RAN) call on its live commercial network, working with Nvidia and Nokia. The collaboration aims to integrate artificial intelligence into wireless network functions to improve efficiency and performance.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang highlighted the milestone at the GTC Berlin conference, pointing to the potential for telecom networks to become a new layer of AI infrastructure.

Nearly 20 operators are reportedly pursuing AI-RAN collaborations, with commercial services anticipated to launch in 2027. The test demonstrated that Nvidia’s computing platform can handle conventional cellular communications.

The approach could support distributed AI infrastructure across cell sites and data centers, bringing AI workloads closer to users and connected devices and enabling new capabilities and services.
