Tesla has begun high-volume production and customer deliveries of its Semi electric truck at a new dedicated factory in Sparks, Nevada. The company aims to produce 50,000 trucks annually at the facility.

The launch comes nearly nine years after Tesla unveiled the Semi in 2017. Production was originally slated to begin in 2019.

Tesla has secured an order for 2,500 trucks from a coalition of shippers that includes Microsoft and PepsiCo. Swedish freight technology firm Einride ordered 500 trucks.

The long-range Semi can travel 500 miles on a single charge while fully loaded. Initial deliveries are going to PepsiCo, DHL and US Foods.
