The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened a preliminary investigation into approximately 1.2 million Tesla vehicles. The probe targets 2018-2020 Model 3 and 2021-2023 Model Y units. Regulators received 156 complaints alleging the front lower lateral link can detach. This defect potentially causes a total loss of steering control.
Most complainants reported the failure occurred without warning. The NHTSA noted the issue appears unrelated to two previous recalls for lateral link detachments. This evaluation aims to determine the cause, scope, and severity of the potential defect.
Separately, CEO Elon Musk refuted a Wall Street Journal report claiming the company was considering selling its China operations. Musk dismissed the claim as absurdly fake news.
