Teva Pharmaceuticals agreed to pay New York state up to $523 million to resolve claims over its role in the opioid epidemic. Announced in November 2022, it was the largest settlement New York Attorney General Letitia James had secured with a single opioid defendant at the time. The deal brought the state’s total recovery from manufacturers and distributors to more than $2 billion.

The funds are designated for opioid abatement, treatment and prevention efforts across New York. The agreement also bans high-dose opioid sales and prohibits opioid marketing.

The payment is part of a broader $4.25 billion nationwide settlement framework for Teva. The New York agreement was structured to remain in effect independently.
