Sygnia, a global cybersecurity firm, released initial findings from an investigation into a cyberattack where a single threat actor used AI as a force multiplier to extort a global enterprise. The attack, which would typically take weeks, was executed in under 72 hours, demonstrating a significant increase in the speed and scale of cyber threats.
The investigation found that the attacker used AI to accelerate reconnaissance, develop attack tools, and adapt to the target's cloud environment with remarkable speed. The malicious scripts and code showed characteristics of AI generation, adapting as the intrusion progressed. This incident highlights the emerging threat of agentic AI-assisted workflows in cyberattacks, allowing a lone actor to operate at a pace that can overwhelm conventional security responses.
