SpaceX secured its first customer for its new Starfall business, a service returning payloads from orbit. European mission integrator Space Cargo signed a deal to use the service. The mission is scheduled for 2028, according to Space Cargo's CEO.
The mission will utilize SpaceX's disk-shaped Starfall capsule. A next-generation Starship rocket will launch the capsule to bring back materials from space. Space Cargo will use its "BentoBox" payload system within the capsule. This system will house up to a ton of customer payloads. The payloads will focus on life sciences and biotechnology research conducted in microgravity.
Starfall supports the growing market for in-space manufacturing and research. It enables the return of products like pharmaceuticals and advanced materials to Earth. SpaceX conducted a successful demonstration mission of the Starfall capsule in June 2026.
