Sony is transferring 419 global patents covering virtual, augmented and mixed reality to Meta. The portfolio includes patents for head-mounted displays and XR glasses technologies that Sony filed over more than a decade.

The move is widely seen as Sony scaling back its VR hardware ambitions after PlayStation VR2 sales came in below expectations. For Meta, the patents bolster its intellectual property as it invests in the metaverse and future devices, including planned high-end VR glasses. Neither company has issued an official statement. The transfers have been occurring since June 2026, underscoring a consolidation of XR technology at Meta.
