Shopify is expanding support for browser-based AI agents, allowing them to complete checkout on a user's behalf. Previously, agents could only search for products and add them to a cart. The update lets agents inspect, update and submit checkout, including processing payments through Shop Pay, after the buyer gives final authorization.

The feature uses Shopify's WebMCP (Web Model Context Protocol) and requires no additional merchant configuration. It gives AI agents a structured, secure way to interact with checkout instead of relying on methods such as screen scraping.

The move signals Shopify's push into agentic commerce. It contrasts with other major retailers, including Amazon, which has reportedly blocked similar AI purchasing agents.
