Shell Plc lost a five-year legal battle as South Africa’s Constitutional Court set aside the company’s exploration rights off the Wild Coast. The ruling prevents Shell from renewing permits to explore for oil and gas in the ecologically sensitive region.
The legal challenge began in 2021 when Shell planned a seismic survey in the area. Environmental activists led the campaign, citing concerns over the impact on marine life and local communities.
This court decision stalls Shell’s offshore ambitions in South Africa and may encourage further legal challenges against regional oil projects. Separately, Shell announced the routine repurchase and cancellation of shares on August 13, 2026, as part of its ongoing buy-back programme.
