Sappi North America is one of five paper and packaging companies named in a lawsuit filed by the Greater Augusta Utility District in Maine. The district alleges the companies contaminated local waterways with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as forever chemicals. It is seeking damages to cover past and future costs of remediating the local drinking water supply.

The utility has requested a jury trial and is seeking compensatory costs, alleging negligence and the creation of a continuing public nuisance. The case adds Sappi to a growing number of corporations targeted over alleged PFAS releases into the environment, exposing the company to potential legal and financial risks.
