Rio Tinto paused underground operations at its Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold mine in Mongolia after a seismic event on October 29. Ground vibrations occurred along a rock fault zone, prompting the shutdown as a procedural safety measure. Three employees were injured; no fatalities were reported.
Oyu Tolgoi is a critical asset for Rio Tinto’s copper production and future growth. By 2030, it is anticipated to become the world’s fourth-largest copper mine.
The full impact and duration of the stoppage remain under review pending a safety assessment. Separately, border crossing restrictions have reduced the mine’s copper concentrate exports to China.
