Planet Labs PBC announced that its subsidiary, Planet Labs Federal, has been awarded an evaluation task order by NASA under the agency’s Commercial Satellite Data Acquisition (CSDA) program. NASA will assess the utility of Planet’s Tanager hyperspectral satellite dataset in supporting its Earth science research goals.
Under the agreement, NASA will evaluate more than 250,000 square kilometers of Planet’s high-resolution hyperspectral imagery. The assessment will focus on applications including atmospheric composition, biodiversity, hydrology and rapid response to events such as wildfires.
After the evaluation, NASA will publish a report on the data’s quality and utility. The findings could inform decisions about making the data more widely available to government-funded researchers.
