NRG Energy, Inc. has moved a proposed large natural gas plant intended to power a Texas hyperscale data campus through an early-stage process with the Texas grid operator. The project’s inclusion in the process was reported in late September, bringing it closer to realization as electricity demand from the computing sector grows.

The development adds to a series of NRG agreements to serve data centers in Texas and the Mid-Atlantic. To speed construction of new gas capacity, NRG has partnered with equipment manufacturer GE Vernova and construction firm Kiewit. By securing turbines and construction partners early, the company aims to gain an advantage amid high demand for equipment.
