Cloudflare plans to become a public Certificate Authority (CA), an open service that issues digital certificates websites use to encrypt traffic and verify their identity. To support the move, Cloudflare will acquire publicly trusted Root CA key material from GlobalSign. The move positions Cloudflare to play a larger role in the internet’s foundational trust infrastructure.
The new CA will support traditional encryption and next-generation Merkle Tree Certificates (MTCs), which are resistant to attacks from quantum computers. Cloudflare aims to give every website a path to stay protected as computing power advances.
Separately, Cloudflare announced a strategic partnership with Deutsche Telekom to enhance digital infrastructure security for enterprises across Europe.
