Shares of Nanobiotix surged 47% over five trading days to $31.00, capping a week-long rally sparked by the company's updated Phase 1 melanoma results presented Saturday at Europe's premier cancer conference in Madrid. The question now: how much clinical value can investors extract from a study with just two dozen patients?
• A Strong Response Rate — in a Notoriously Difficult Patient Group. Among 24 heavily pre-treated patients whose melanoma had resisted standard immunotherapy drugs, Nanobiotix's injectable nanoparticle treatment paired with radiation and a checkpoint inhibitor produced a 41.7% response rate, a 75% disease control rate, and median overall survival of 17.8 months. For context, existing second-line options for these anti-PD-1-resistant patients — including combinations like lenvatinib plus pembrolizumab or cell-based therapies — typically achieve response rates of roughly 20%–30% with median progression-free survival around 4–5 months.
Nanobiotix's patients showed median progression-free survival of 6.9 months, more than double what literature typically documents for comparable populations. That gap is what has investors excited.
• Johnson & Johnson Holds the Keys to What Comes Next. Nanobiotix licensed its technology globally to J&J's Janssen unit in 2023, in a deal worth up to $2.6 billion in milestone payments.
The nanoparticle is Nanobiotix's sole clinical-stage asset and its entire near-term commercial story. That means NBTX shareholders are essentially betting that J&J will see enough promise to fund larger randomized trials in melanoma — on top of the already-running pivotal Phase 3 head-and-neck cancer trial, which was recently amended to bring forward its final analysis at 335 events with 92% statistical power.
• A Small Study Carrying a Big Valuation. These are early data from a single-arm study with no comparison group, meaning the results could look very different in a controlled setting. Yet the stock's rally has pushed NBTX's market capitalization from roughly $1 billion to approximately $1.5 billion in days. Before this data drop, the market was already assigning nearly $850 million in value to the drug pipeline alone, above cash on hand of about $53 million.
• Cash Runway Matters for a Company That Doesn't Sell Anything Yet. Nanobiotix reported €110.9 million in cash as of June 30, 2026 , bolstered by a $100 million oversubscribed equity offering closed in May . R&D spending ran at €40.5 million annually, with another €20.5 million in overhead — meaning the company has roughly two years of runway. If J&J's head-and-neck trial delivers, milestone payments could turn that math around. If it doesn't, the melanoma data alone won't carry a billion-dollar-plus valuation built on a 24-patient study.
