MaxLinear has introduced Puma 9, its next-generation chip for DOCSIS modems and gateways. The platform supports multiple DOCSIS standards, including DOCSIS 4.0, which enables multi-gigabit internet speeds. MaxLinear says Puma 9 can reduce customer premises equipment costs by 30% to 50% compared with its predecessor.
Puma 9 moves from the Intel x86 architecture used in previous generations to an ARM-based architecture. It also supports DDR5 memory, which could help address supply pressures on older DDR4 memory. The platform is designed to be ready for post-quantum cryptography security standards.
MaxLinear expects modems and gateways equipped with Puma 9 to become available starting in 2027. The company has secured multiple commitments for the chip.
