Mafab Communications is reportedly transferring its spectrum assets to MTN Nigeria. The assets include a 100 MHz block in the 3.5 GHz band. The deal also includes 2x20 MHz in the 2.1 GHz band. These assets have remained unused for four years.

The Nigerian Communications Commission is reallocating dormant spectrum to active operators. This move aims to accelerate network expansion across Nigeria.

Both companies acquired 5G licenses in a 2021 auction. Each operator paid $273.6 million for their respective licenses. MTN has actively rolled out its network while Mafab’s assets remained dormant.

The transfer allows MTN to consolidate its 5G spectrum holdings. Financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed.
