OpenAI has officially launched Astra for Law, a new AI platform specifically designed for the legal industry. The product combines OpenAI's most powerful model, GPT-6 Astra, with a proprietary legal search index that includes over 230 million documents covering U.S. case law, statutes, and regulations. The platform is engineered to enhance legal analysis, research, and writing, showing a 40% improvement in correctness on certain legal benchmarks compared to the standard model.
The initial rollout targets select law firms and legal technology companies, with firms like Cooley participating as design partners. To integrate into existing workflows, Astra for Law launched with 26 plugins for widely used legal tools from companies like Thomson Reuters, Relativity, and Clio. This strategic move intensifies OpenAI's competition with other AI labs like Anthropic and presents a direct challenge to established legal tech incumbents such as Thomson Reuters and RELX's LexisNexis.
