French AI lab Mistral AI has announced Mistral Large 4, a one-trillion-parameter multimodal model. The company is positioning it as Europe’s primary contender against American and Chinese competitors.
Nicknamed Le Chonk, the model is available through a public preview API. Mistral plans to release its open weights on October 27, allowing developers to run it on their own servers.
Mistral claims the model is the most powerful open-weight system developed outside China. The company also says it delivers state-of-the-art results in cybersecurity, finance and manufacturing.
Mistral is marketing the model as a sovereign European AI solution for enterprise and government clients. It says the model was trained on its own infrastructure within Europe.
