Microsoft released its 2026 Digital Defense Report on October 2, 2026. The report says AI is helping threat actors accelerate cyberattacks, reducing the time needed for activities such as data exfiltration and lateral movement from days to minutes.

The report highlights the growing use of AI to create sophisticated phishing attacks and discover software vulnerabilities, putting pressure on defenders to adapt quickly.

Microsoft’s official X (formerly Twitter) account was compromised on October 1, 2026, to promote a Clippy-themed cryptocurrency. On October 2, the company said it had secured the account and was investigating the incident.

Microsoft also began rolling out its Windows 11 26H2 update. Rather than adding new features, the update enables previously released updates that had been staggered, making them available to all users.
