A new report from venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) finds that ChatGPT has three times as many paid U.S. consumer subscribers as either Google’s Gemini or Anthropic’s Claude. [3, 5, 7] The analysis incorporated consumer spending data for the first time. [2, 7] It also found that Claude has surpassed Gemini in U.S. paid subscribers, becoming the second most popular service. [2, 7]

Nearly half of U.S. consumers have tried AI, but paid subscriptions are concentrated among a small group of power users. [3, 4] Just 4.5% of U.S. consumers have an active paid subscription to one of the top three AI services. [3, 5]

The top 1% of spenders account for 19.5% of total spending. [1] The top 10% account for roughly half of all revenue. [1]
