Shares of Marvell Technology (MRVL) jumped 7.47% to $19.14 after the chipmaker unveiled what it called the industry's first optical interconnect chips built on cutting-edge 2-nanometer manufacturing — the smallest, most power-efficient process available — at Europe's largest fiber-optics conference in Málaga, Spain. Marvell announced at ECOC 2026 the demonstration of the industry's first 2nm optical technologies for AI data center infrastructure. The timing is deliberate: it lands days after a supply deal designed to ensure Marvell can actually build these products at scale.
• AI Data Centers Are Running Out of Bandwidth, and Marvell Is Selling the Fix. As AI data center architectures scale from 1.6 terabits to 3.2 terabits and beyond, operators require faster, lower-power and more secure optical interconnects. Traditional copper cables are hitting physical distance and speed limits as chip-to-chip lanes climb past 200 gigabits per second. Anything within a few meters was once in reach of cheaper copper interconnects, but as lane speeds climbed, copper began running into practical reach limits. That shift is the core revenue thesis for Marvell's optics business.
• A Supply Deal Last Week Shows Marvell Is Betting Real Money, Not Just Slide Decks. On September 17, GlobalFoundries and Marvell announced an expanded multi-year agreement to increase capacity for silicon germanium technology at GlobalFoundries' Burlington, Vermont, facility. Locking in dedicated wafer capacity signals Marvell expects customer orders large enough to justify the commitment. The expanded agreement builds on existing production and is expected to add significant capacity to support Marvell's growing requirements.
• The Financial Backdrop Is Strong but the Payoff Remains Forward-Looking. Marvell delivered approximately $8.2 billion in revenue in fiscal 2026, growing more than 40% year over year.
Data center revenues reached a record $2.17 billion in Q2 fiscal 2027, up 46% year over year and accounting for 79% of total revenues. The company has guided to $11 billion in fiscal 2027 revenue. Yet no production timelines or customer details were disclosed for the 2nm optical products shown this week.
• Acquisitions Are Stacking the Deck — at a Price. Marvell completed its $1.3 billion cash acquisition of Celestial AI in February, bringing in photonic interconnect technology expected to accelerate its connectivity strategy.
Marvell expects initial revenue from Celestial AI to begin in the second half of fiscal 2028, ramping to a $1 billion annualized run rate by fiscal 2029. That's a long wait. The key risk: optical 2nm products don't convert into volume shipments fast enough, and the market treats the demos as marketing.
Bottom line: Marvell is assembling the most complete optical toolkit in semiconductors. The question investors must answer is whether today's demos become tomorrow's purchase orders — or just conference-floor applause.
