The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) authorized Moderna’s updated Spikevax vaccine. This version targets the circulating SARS-CoV-2 XFG variant. The approval applies to adults and children aged six months and older.
Moderna will supply these doses for the UK’s 2026/27 NHS vaccination program. The Moderna Innovation and Technology Centre in Oxfordshire will manufacture the vaccine. This facility opened in September 2025. The site operates under a 10-year strategic partnership with the UK government to enhance pandemic preparedness.
The decision aligns with Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) guidance. The European Medicines Agency’s task force recently issued a similar recommendation for the 2026/2027 campaign.
