Moderna’s first mRNA-based seasonal flu vaccine, mFlusiva, is now available in the U.S. for the 2026–2027 flu season. [4, 11] The FDA approved it in August 2026 for adults aged 50 and older. [5, 7, 9] The launch expands Moderna’s mRNA platform beyond its COVID-19 shots.
For adults aged 65 and older, approval is on an accelerated basis, with further studies ongoing. [1, 2, 8]
The mRNA technology allows faster manufacturing and may help the vaccine better match rapidly evolving flu strains than vaccines made using traditional methods. [7, 10]
In clinical trials, mFlusiva showed about 27% greater efficacy against confirmed influenza than standard-dose vaccines in adults aged 50 to 64. [4, 6]
