The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) orders for 20 Zyn nicotine pouch variants. This decision marks the first time any nicotine pouch product has received this specific authorization.
Philip Morris International owns the Zyn brand, which Altria distributes within the United States. The FDA ruling allows these products to be marketed as lower-risk alternatives to traditional cigarettes.
The authorization permits claims that using Zyn instead of cigarettes reduces the risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, and lung cancer. The marketing may also cite lower risks for stroke, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.
An extensive scientific review supported the FDA's conclusion that these claims are accurate. The agency determined the move would benefit public health by helping inform adult smokers.
