The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has opened a formal investigation into Meta Platforms’ Instagram Instants feature. It is examining whether Meta assessed risks to children and risks involving illegal content before the feature launched, as required by the Online Safety Act.
A breach could result in a fine of up to 10% of Meta’s global revenue. The investigation could also set a precedent for how regulators worldwide scrutinize new social media features.
A Meta spokesperson said the company had conducted a risk analysis and would cooperate with the investigation.
