Meta has banned ByteDance from advertising on Facebook and Instagram in seven countries, including the U.S., Canada and Japan. The ban took effect immediately. It also covers third-party advertisers whose campaigns direct users to TikTok or other ByteDance properties in those markets.

A Meta spokesperson called the decision a “normal business practice,” saying, “We don't have to run ads from a competitor whose goal is to pull people off our apps.”

The move escalates competition between the companies for user engagement and advertising revenue. It follows growing public tension over child safety standards. Meta recently agreed to a major settlement with U.S. states over protections for younger users and urged rivals, including TikTok, to adopt similar measures.

The financial impact is unclear. Strategically, the ban closes a potential avenue for TikTok to acquire users from Meta's large audience.
