Meta Platforms faces a landmark class-action lawsuit in Australia alleging that Facebook and Instagram harm children and teenagers. Filed in the Federal Court by law firm MinterEllison on behalf of eight plaintiffs, the suit claims the platforms use addictive design features and expose underage users to harmful content.
The case could be the first in Australia to hold a social media company responsible for user harm, specifically harm to minors. The plaintiffs are seeking compensation for damages they say they suffered while under 18.
A Meta spokesperson said the company was aware of the claim and would defend itself vigorously. The court has ordered that the applicants’ identities and specific details of the claim be suppressed.
