Shares slid 7% to $0.36 as investors digested a toxic mix of deepening losses, a major German mill going dark for a full month, and growing questions about whether this $26 million market-cap company can stay solvent long enough for pulp markets to recover.
The Losses Are Getting Worse, Not Better. Mercer posted Q2 revenue of $460.3 million, an operating loss of $59.0 million, and Operating EBITDA of negative $21.0 million , including a $29.0 million non-cash inventory impairment . EPS of -$1.13 missed analyst estimates of -$0.62 by over 80% . Historically high fiber costs in Germany, driven by the Ukraine war halting Russian wood inflows and subsidized wood-pellet energy producers bidding up supply , are squeezing the company's core European operations from a cost angle that management cannot quickly fix.
A Key Mill Is Going Offline Right Now. Mercer extended its Rosenthal mill's planned two-week maintenance shutdown to cover the entire month of September 2026 . That facility produces 360,000 tonnes of kraft pulp annually —roughly one-sixth of Mercer's total capacity. A full month offline means approximately 30,000 tonnes of lost output, denting Q3 revenue at a time the company is already bleeding cash.
The Balance Sheet Raises Survival Questions. As of June 30, Mercer had $78.8 million in cash and about $112.9 million available under revolving credit lines—aggregate liquidity of roughly $191.7 million . But shareholders' equity stood at a negative $98 million deficit . The company added going-concern language to its financial statements, stemming from reclassification of revolving credit facilities as current liabilities . Its Canadian credit facility matures in January 2027, and management admitted it will likely breach its German facility's leverage ratio in Q4 .
Cost Cuts and Mass Timber Offer a Thin Lifeline. Mercer's cost program has delivered roughly $54 million in savings since April 2025, targeting $100 million by year-end . The Torgau restructuring plans to eliminate about 350 positions by mid-2027 . Meanwhile, a $151 million mass timber order book, anchored by data-center projects, is expected to begin contributing in late 2026 and into 2027 . But with no agreements yet reached on restructuring its 2028 and 2029 senior notes and analysts averaging a "Sell" rating with a $0.60 price target , the market is pricing Mercer as a company running out of runway before its turnaround can take hold.
