California ride-hailing drivers are poised to form the California Gig Workers Union. This move allows drivers to bargain collectively for better pay and benefits while remaining independent contractors.

The union met the required support threshold from active drivers. State regulators could certify the organization within 30 days under a law passed last year.

This development follows the 2020 passage of Proposition 22, which classified drivers as contractors. The California Supreme Court upheld that classification in 2024.

Drivers will now negotiate terms directly with companies like Uber and Lyft. A Lyft spokesperson stated the company is committed to engaging in good faith.
