The FDA approved Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro (tirzepatide) to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in adults with type 2 diabetes. This indication includes cardiovascular death, non-fatal heart attacks, and non-fatal strokes for patients at high risk.

Mounjaro is now the first dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist proven to lower these specific cardiovascular risks. The drug maintains its existing clinical benefits for blood sugar control and weight loss.

The approval stems from the SURPASS-CVOT trial, the first head-to-head cardiovascular outcomes study comparing two incretin medicines. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for individuals with type 2 diabetes. This expanded label supports Mounjaro’s use in a broader patient population and strengthens its competitive market position.
