Eli Lilly announced new data suggesting its oral GLP-1 drug Foundayo (orforglipron) provided greater weight loss and blood sugar control than Novo Nordisk's oral semaglutide in adults with type 2 diabetes. The results were presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) meeting in Milan.

The findings come from an indirect comparison of separate late-stage trials, not a head-to-head study. After 52 weeks, patients taking 17.2 mg of Foundayo lost an average of 1.5% more body weight than those taking 25 mg of oral semaglutide. Foundayo patients also had a 0.3% greater reduction in A1C levels.

The findings add to competition between the two pharmaceutical companies in the market for obesity and diabetes treatments.
