Eli Lilly reported detailed results from its TRIUMPH-2 Phase 3 trial of investigational retatrutide in adults with type 2 diabetes and obesity. The results were presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and published in The Lancet.
After 80 weeks, participants taking the highest dose, 12 mg, lost an average of 20.8% of their body weight, or about 49.6 pounds. A1C levels fell by up to 1.6%. The trial also met key secondary goals, and nearly 60% of participants taking the highest dose no longer met the BMI criteria for obesity.
Retatrutide is a first-in-class triple agonist that targets GIP, GLP-1, and glucagon receptors to regulate blood sugar and appetite. The most common side effects were mild to moderate gastrointestinal issues.
