Lithium Americas and other lithium producers fell on October 12, 2026, after Chinese lithium carbonate futures dropped nearly 10%. The decline brought futures to a near 10-month low.

The drop followed an agreement between China and the European Union expected to reduce Chinese hybrid-car exports to the EU, prompting concerns about future demand for lithium, a key battery material.

Lithium prices have also faced pressure since May amid concerns about a changing supply-demand balance. Goldman Sachs analysts forecast that the global lithium market will shift from a deficit to a surplus in the coming years.

Lithium Americas is developing the Thacker Pass project. A prolonged period of lower lithium prices could affect the project’s future profitability.
