Shares of IREN surged +10.1% to $49.20 Tuesday after the company announced its 2-gigawatt Sweetwater Hub in West Texas was conditionally designated as a "Base Load" resource in ERCOT's Batch Zero process — the Texas grid operator's new framework for reviewing large power users. The gain caps a staggering 34% climb over five trading sessions, even as Bitcoin slipped nearly 1%. That divergence signals the market is repricing IREN as an AI-infrastructure play, not a crypto miner.
- Clearing the Grid Bottleneck Matters More Than It Sounds. ERCOT is tracking more than 438 GW of large-load requests, and nearly 90% are from data centers.
Rather than processing applications one by one, Batch Zero groups credible projects together; those earning Base Load classification are "essentially acknowledged as real demand, not aspirational filings." In practical terms, IREN jumped the line ahead of hundreds of speculative proposals. Governor Abbott in August ordered a comprehensive audit of all data centers in the queue , which delayed classifications — making today's conditional approval even more notable as a sign of project maturity.
- Construction Is Already Underway, Not Hypothetical. A high-voltage substation at Sweetwater 1 was energized on May 1, 2026, unlocking the ability to begin constructing 300 MW of data center capacity.
Delivery of that first phase is targeted for Q4 2027.
The two Sweetwater sites — 1,400 MW and 600 MW — form part of IREN's announced 5 GW-plus global portfolio. Physical progress separates IREN from paper-stage competitors and de-risks the timeline.
- Revenue Contracts Back the Buildout. IREN reports $4 billion in contracted annualized run-rate revenue for 2026 capacity, with $1 billion already operating. That revenue comes from clients including Microsoft, NVIDIA, Perplexity, Figure AI, and others across bare-metal and managed cloud services.
The company also arranged $2.8 billion of GPU financing that covers roughly 90% of associated capital spending , reducing dilution risk.
- Conditional Still Means Conditional. The classification is conditional — IREN and every other Batch Zero project still need to pass further verification steps before the designation becomes permanent.
ERCOT aims to complete the broader audit by December 10. Any hiccup there could stall timelines. Meanwhile, IREN posted a fiscal 2026 net loss of $702.6 million, including $638.8 million of non-cash impairments from decommissioning mining equipment. The pivot is real — but so are the transition costs investors are temporarily overlooking.
