Intel is exploring a return to the memory chip sector after previously exiting the market.

CEO Lip-Bu Tan confirmed the company is developing new technologies including cross-batch memory (XBM) and Z-angle memory (ZAM). Recent patent filings indicate XBM aims to compete with HBM4 performance standards.

The strategic shift follows the 2022 discontinuation of Intel Optane memory and the 2020 sale of its NAND business to SK hynix. Intel now seeks to capture the high margins and significant demand driven by the global AI boom.
