Union leaders at BHP’s Escondida copper mine in Chile formally rejected the company’s final wage offer. The union represents more than 1,000 supervisors and staff members. Leadership urged members to vote for a strike over disputes regarding compensation, job responsibilities, and shift systems.

Workers will cast official strike votes between September 28 and September 30. A rejection triggers a mandatory five-day government mediation period before any legal walkout can occur. The current labor contract expires on September 30.

Production at the world’s largest copper mine remains unaffected for now. Union leadership stated that significant differences remain and an agreement is not imminent. The escalating dispute introduces uncertainty into the global copper market.
