Amazon subsidiary Kuiper Systems filed an FCC application to operate 5,105 low-Earth orbit satellites. This constellation will power a direct-to-device network for standard mobile phones. The system will utilize Globalstar’s licensed spectrum to provide voice, data, and messaging services.
This initiative remains separate from Amazon’s primary satellite broadband project. The plan depends on Amazon’s pending acquisition of Globalstar, which was announced in April 2026. Amazon expects the transaction to close in 2027.
The company aims to combine its infrastructure with Globalstar’s existing satellites and ground network to reach underserved areas. Amazon plans to begin satellite deployment in 2028.
