Goldman Sachs shares saw premarket activity after The Wall Street Journal reported that the bank is considering a leadership succession plan. The report cited people familiar with the matter.

The plan could see CEO David Solomon step down, with President and Chief Operating Officer John Waldron taking over as soon as next year. Discussions have reportedly considered Waldron becoming CEO around the end of 2027 or in 2028.

Under the potential plan, Solomon would remain on the board as executive chairman for one to two years after the transition to ensure a smooth handover.

Separately, before the report, HSBC analysts raised their price target on Goldman Sachs shares to $1,007 from $995 and maintained a Hold rating.
