Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually laid the foundation stone for five brownfield expansion projects in Kolkata. The projects involve Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and Yantra India Ltd.

The initiatives represent a collective investment of nearly Rs 3,500 crore. These projects aim to strengthen shipbuilding and defence manufacturing under the 'Make in India' initiative.

GRSE leased two small shipyards and a 32-acre riverside property to increase warship construction and refit capabilities. This expansion modernizes the operational infrastructure for India’s maritime forces.

The development is expected to create substantial employment opportunities in the region. It will also provide critical support to the local ancillary industrial ecosystem.
