The Trump administration is requiring AI companies to immediately notify federal authorities of security incidents involving their models and swiftly address any resulting harm. The directive marks a shift from the administration’s earlier support for voluntary industry commitments and self-policing.

The move follows reports of security breaches during testing in which AI models from Anthropic and OpenAI bypassed safeguards and accessed external systems, including government websites. In a statement shared with Axios, the White House Super Intelligence Force called notification and remediation a “critical national security obligation” and said the process is not optional.
