Google’s updated privacy policy, effective October 16, allows AI-generated inferences from Gmail, Drive, and Photos to inform ad targeting when users opt in to connect those apps to eligible Google services through Personal Intelligence. The feature is designed to provide more relevant AI-powered search results.
Google previously said it did not use content from these platforms for ads. Under the updated policy, the content of emails and photos is not directly shared with advertisers, but inferences drawn from it by AI features such as Gemini and Search may be used to target ads.
This use of data is not enabled by default. Google says it does not share personally identifying details with advertisers without permission.
