Google now provides all engineers access to Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5 model. This marks a significant shift from previous policies that prioritized Google’s internal Gemini AI. Access is facilitated through an internal development platform called Antigravity and is subject to per-user quotas.
Previously, Google restricted Claude access to select teams, including those within Google DeepMind. This limitation caused frustration among engineers who found Gemini’s coding capabilities lagged behind rival models.
Google stated that Gemini remains its primary and foundational model for internal development. A spokesperson clarified that third-party models like Claude are supplementary tools intended for specialized use cases. The move acknowledges intense competition in AI-assisted coding and the need for high-performance productivity tools.
