Google is set to defend itself in a London trial this week against a £1.2 billion class-action lawsuit. The case is brought on behalf of approximately 20 million UK consumers.
The lawsuit alleges Google used its dominant market position to charge commissions of up to 30% on purchases made through the Play Store for the Android operating system. It says the fees have applied since 2015 and were passed on to consumers through higher prices for apps and in-app content.
Google denies anti-competitive behavior. The consumer trial follows Google’s agreement in August 2026 to pay £260 million to settle a related but separate UK case brought by app developers over the same commission structure.
