General Motors and the Alliance for Automotive Innovation warned that California car sales could halt starting July 1, 2026. The warning addresses a state law requiring specific in-car technology to protect domestic violence survivors.

The alliance, which represents Toyota and other major manufacturers, is urging the state legislature to delay these technical requirements. Industry leaders stated the current deadlines are unfeasible due to necessary engineering, validation, and integration work.

Automakers noted they have already implemented other survivor protections required by the statute. The group maintains that while they support the law's objectives, the vehicle system deadlines cannot be met on the current schedule.
