U.S. consumer sentiment declined for a third consecutive month in early October, falling to 46.3 from September's final reading of 48.1. The preliminary figure from the University of Michigan missed the consensus forecast of 47.6 as households expressed deepening concern over high fuel prices and regional instability in the Middle East.
While the Current Economic Conditions index plunged to 44.7 from 50.9, the Expectations gauge showed a modest improvement, rising to 47.3. However, inflation expectations continued to climb, with the one-year outlook reaching 4.7% and the five-year forecast ticking up to 3.5%.
The U.S. Dollar remained well-supported following the release, with the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) navigating the 102.30 region. Investors are closely monitoring the rising inflation gauges, which reinforce the case for the Federal Reserve to maintain restrictive policy despite the broader dip in consumer confidence.
