Singapore is ramping up investment in semiconductor manufacturing as the artificial intelligence boom drives global demand for chips. GlobalFoundries, UMC, and a joint venture between Vanguard and NXP are expanding chipmaking capacity in the city-state. Singapore already accounts for one-tenth of global chip production, and the investments aim to strengthen its position as a key industry hub.

The expansion faces challenges from high operating costs, limited land, and a persistent shortage of skilled workers. Semiconductor engineering roles appear on the government’s official Shortage Occupation List.

The industry must also navigate geopolitical tensions, including US trade scrutiny and potential tariffs. These pressures could weaken Singapore’s competitiveness against lower-cost regional rivals.
