GlobalFoundries announced FDX Fusion™, its next-generation fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (FD-SOI) platform for energy-efficient chips used in Physical AI applications. The company plans to develop and manufacture the platform at its Dresden, Germany, site, with manufacturing expected to begin in 2028. GlobalFoundries says the technology aims to pair 7nm-like digital performance with advanced capabilities for AI workloads at the edge.
The announcement coincided with the topping-out of the SPRINT expansion project in Dresden. The expansion is a significant part of Europe's effort to strengthen its semiconductor supply chain under the European Chips Act. GlobalFoundries aims to make the Dresden facility Europe's largest foundry site by the end of 2028.
