Shares of Fortuna Metals (ASX: FUN) jumped 10.3% to A$0.07 after the company reported that aircore drilling at its Kahuna prospect returned 24 metres at 1.27% rutile below the base of its existing resource estimate. For a micro-cap explorer valued around A$20 million, the result raises a pointed question: how much bigger can this deposit get, and does the market have any reason to pay up yet?

The Deposit Just Got a Third Dimension. Fortuna's maiden resource, announced in July 2026, stands at 298 million tonnes at 0.87% rutile, containing roughly 2.6 million tonnes of rutile. But that resource was built from 228 hand-auger holes averaging just 8.4 metres in depth.

The new Kahuna results show mineralisation running 24 metres at 1.27% rutile below the resource depth limit, with the zone still open to the north and south. In simple terms, the company only counted the top slice of the deposit — and now it appears the ore body extends much deeper at higher grades.

The Neighbour Next Door Sets the Ceiling — and the Gap. Mkanda sits directly along strike from Sovereign Metals' Kasiya deposit, the world's largest natural rutile resource.

Sovereign's market cap sits near A$282 million — roughly 14 times Fortuna's valuation — on the same geological belt. On an enterprise-value-per-contained-rutile-tonne basis, Sovereign commands about A$15.6 million versus Fortuna's roughly A$7.7 million. If deeper drilling materially lifts Fortuna's tonnage, that valuation gap could narrow — but only if the resource upgrades from the lowest-confidence "Inferred" category.

Rutile Prices Provide a Favourable Backdrop — For Now. Natural rutile held near US$1,200/t through 2025, with Iluka realising about US$1,254–1,256/t FOB in the first half of 2026. Tight supply from maturing mines in Australia and Sierra Leone underpins pricing — a tailwind for projects that can prove up tonnage.

The Catch: It's Still Very Early. The entire Mkanda resource remains Inferred — the lowest confidence level under reporting standards.

Core drilling is planned this month with a pre-feasibility study targeted for December. Until those milestones land, Fortuna remains a geological story, not a funded project. The 10% pop signals interest, but at A$0.07, the stock prices in hope — not cash flow.
