Freddie Mac released its August 2026 mortgage portfolio data. The serious delinquency rate in its multifamily division rose to 0.64%. That is the highest level in more than 20 years.
The increase points to growing pressure on apartment building owners. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have substantially expanded their involvement in the multifamily market. They reportedly backed nearly half of all new apartment loans in 2026. Rising delinquency rates are making it harder for owners to manage their properties and loans.
